An Equivalence between Dependencies in Nested Databases and a Fragment of Propositional Logic

چکیده
We extend the result on the equivalence between functional and multivalued dependencies in relational databases and a fragment of propositional logic. It is shown that this equivalence still holds for functional and multivalued dependencies in databases that support complex values via nesting of records and lists. The equivalence has several implications. Firstly, it extends a well-known result from relational databases to databases which are not in first normal form. Secondly, it characterises the implication of functional and multivalued dependencies in complex-value databases in purely logical terms. The database designer can take advantage of this equivalence to reduce database design problems to simpler problems in propositional logic. Furthermore, relational database design tools can be reused to solve problems for complex-value databases.

Characterising nested database dependencies by fragments of propositional logic
We extend the earlier results on the equivalence between the Boolean and the multivalued dependencies in relational databases and fragments of the Boolean propositional logic. It is shown that these equivalences are still valid for the databases that store complex data elements obtained from the recursive nesting of record, list, set and multiset constructors. The major proof argument utilises ...
متن کاملWeak Functional Dependencies: Full Propositional Expressiveness for the Database Practitioner
We study inference systems of weak functional dependencies in relational and complex-value databases. Functional dependencies form a very common class of database constraints. Designers and administrators proficiently utilise them in everyday database practice. Functional dependencies correspond to the linear-time decidable fragment of Horn clauses in propositional logic. Weak functional depend...
متن کاملEquality propositional logic and its extensions
We introduce a new formal logic, called equality propositional logic. It has two basic connectives, $boldsymbol{wedge}$ (conjunction) and $equiv$ (equivalence). Moreover, the $Rightarrow$ (implication) connective can be derived as $ARightarrow B:=(Aboldsymbol{wedge}B)equiv A$. We formulate the equality propositional logic and demonstrate that the resulting logic has reasonable properties such a...

We extend Fagin’s result on the equivalence between functional dependencies in relational databases and propositional Horn clauses. It is shown that this equivalence still holds for functional dependencies in databases that support complex values via nesting of records, lists, sets and multisets. The equivalence has several implications. Firstly, it extends a well-known result from relational d...
متن کاملCharacterising equilibrium logic and nested logic programs: Reductions and complexity,
Equilibrium logic is an approach to nonmonotonic reasoning that extends the stable-model and answer-set semantics for logic programs. In particular, it includes the general case of nested logic programs, where arbitrary Boolean combinations are permitted in heads and bodies of rules, as special kinds of theories. In this paper, we present polynomial reductions of the main reasoning tasks associ...
